CHEMICALS CONTAINED:
Not only can they be absorbed through the skin and scalp, but styling products are often sprayed near the face and may be inhaled. They often contain flammable ingredients.
Hair spray and styling mousse contain very similar ingredients, but come in different forms. They may contain PVP/VA copolymer, aerosol propellants, formaldehyde, and synthetic fragrances and colors.
Most synthetic dyes and fragrances are made from petroleum by-products or coal tars (a carcinogenic liquid or semi-liquid from bituminous coal). Coal tars can contain benzene, xylene, naphthalene, phenol and creosol.
HEALTH CONCERNS:
PVP/VA is petroleum-derived and is basically a type of plastic. Inhaled particles may damage lungs and it is possibly carcinogenic.
Aerosol propellants can cause health effects of their own, including heart problems, birth defects, lung cancer, headaches, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, skin, eye and throat irritation, liver damage.
Synthetic fragrances may cause a wide range of acute and chronic effects such as respiratory irritation, headache, sneezing, watery eyes, other allergic symptoms, sensitization, nervous system depression and skin irritation.
Nitrobenzene may be used in making synthetic dyes. Nitrobenzene can irritate eyes and skin at low exposure levels, and in larger amounts has damaged liver and blood in animals. Benzene is a known human carcinogen. Naphthalene is a possible human carcinogen that has been linked to cancer in animal tests, and exposure to large amounts may damage or destroy red blood cells.
TIPS & ALTERNATIVES:
There are natural products on the market that use few, if any, of the above ingredients and do work well. Look for sprays and mousses in non-aerosol pump bottles.
