Lip Balm
is in the following categories:
Skin Care Products
Lip Balm
CHEMICALS CONTAINED:
May contain mineral oil or petrolatum. May also contain other petroleum-based chemicals, synthetic fragrances and colors.
Most synthetic dyes and fragrances are made from petroleum by-products or coal tars (a carcinogenic liquid or semi-liquid from bituminous coal). Coal tars can contain benzene, xylene, naphthalene, phenol and creosol.
HEALTH CONCERNS:
Mineral oil and petrolatum seem to nourish and moisturize skin, but actually dry out lips and provide no nutritive value for skin.
Synthetic fragrances may cause a wide range of acute and chronic effects such as respiratory irritation, headache, sneezing, watery eyes, other allergic symptoms, sensitization, nervous system depression and skin irritation.
Nitrobenzene may be used in making synthetic dyes. Nitrobenzene can irritate eyes and skin at low exposure levels, and in larger amounts has damaged liver and blood in animals. Benzene is a known human carcinogen. Naphthalene is a possible human carcinogen that has been linked to cancer in animal tests, and exposure to large amounts may damage or destroy red blood cells.
TIPS & ALTERNATIVES:
Use a lip balm made with plant-based ingredients, without mineral oil or petrolatum. Beeswax, carnauba wax, jojoba oil, and vitamin E are some ingredients that soothe and protect lips.
Avoid lip balms that don’t list all of their ingredients – these tend to be the medicated ones.
You can make a lip balm very easily in your kitchen…and you can actually use the same recipe to make a salve:
1 C Light Oil (olive, sweet almond, hempseed, grapeseed, or apricot kernel)
8 tsp Beeswax (or enough for desired texture)
1 tsp Vitamin E Oil
10 – 20 drops of Essential Oil
Simmer wax and base oil until the wax is melted. Add Vitamin E Oil and Essential Oil. Pour into a container and let cool.
NOTE: The first time you make these, it is recommended that you the pour a little of the mixture into one container and refrigerate while you allow the rest of the batch to simmer on low. After 30 – 60 check the consistency of the product in the refrigerator. If you want it to be less oily, add more wax, and if you want it to be less waxy, add more base oil. Make a note of how much additional ingredients you added so that you won’t have to repeat this step next time.
