Skin Care Products
Lotion
CHEMICALS CONTAINED:
Conventional lotions may include synthetic preservatives such as methylparaben or other parabens, as well as phthalates, TEA or DEA as emulsifiers.

Most lotions contain petroleum-derived ingredients, along with synthetic colors and fragrances.

Most synthetic dyes and fragrances are made from petroleum by-products or coal tars (a carcinogenic liquid or semi-liquid from bituminous coal). Coal tars can contain benzene, xylene, naphthalene, phenol and creosol.
HEALTH CONCERNS:
Phthalates (a type of plasticizer) has been linked to health concerns including asthma and impaired respiratory function, endocrine-disrupting, hormonal, and reproductive effects, and possibly cancer.

Parabens (methyl, propyl, butyl, ethyl) may cause skin rashes and allergic reactions. Studies have shown that they are weakly estrongenic and can be absorbed through the skin. One study found parabens in tissue samples from human breast tumors.

Synthetic fragrances may cause a wide range of acute and chronic effects such as respiratory irritation, headache, sneezing, watery eyes, other allergic symptoms, sensitization, nervous system depression and skin irritation.

Nitrobenzene may be used in making synthetic dyes. Nitrobenzene can irritate eyes and skin at low exposure levels, and in larger amounts has damaged liver and blood in animals. Benzene is a known human carcinogen. Naphthalene is a possible human carcinogen that has been linked to cancer in animal tests, and exposure to large amounts may damage or destroy red blood cells.
TIPS & ALTERNATIVES:
Look for products that are made from plant-based ingredients, are unscented or scented with pure essential oils, and contain no synthetic colors, fragrances, or preservatives.

A great alternative to lotion is a salve. Salves are generally just a light oil and beeswax, and work wonders on dry skin. (Look for salves with shea butter in them if you’d like an added moisturizer.) In fact, since the most important ingredient in salves is the oil, you can actually just rub olive oil straight into your dry skin. Doesn’t get much easier than that!

You can also make your own lotion in your kitchen – here’s one recipe to start with:
1 ˝ C Light Oil (olive, sweet almond, hempseed, grapeseed, or apricot kernel)
˝ C Melted Cream Oil (shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil)
10 – 20 drops Essential Oil of your choice
1 tsp Vitamin E Oil
˝ - 1 tsp Vitamin E Oil (as a preservative)
**Can also add jojoba, lanolin (will change texture, and wheat germ

Simmer Light Oil and Cream Oil until Cream Oil is melted. Add Essential Oil, Vitamin E Oil, and any other Additives. Cool mixture and whip or blend until you reach the desired texture. Place into a container.
